Restoring The Rangers Empire EP1- The New Boss in Town
Hello boys, girls & everything in between. It’s me Badjokes, back at you once again with another blog and this blog is one I’ve been waiting to write for so long, as like a slightly grumpy and sarcastic Santa Claus, Miles Jacobsen has come down the proverbial chimney and released the best present of the year: Football Manager 2021!!.
This year for the beta I am going to be attempting to restore the Rangers empire, by leading the club to their first league title since the 2010-2011 season and then hopefully expanding the empire to a first European trophy since 1972.
An Introduction to Rangers
This part of the blog is going to be very brief, as I’m sure most of you beautiful people reading this will know the Rangers story as well, if not better then me. To cut a very long story short Rangers were formed in March 1872. Eighteen years later the Scottish football league was formed and Rangers finished joint top of the league with Dumbarton. A playoff game between the two ended in a 2-2 draw and for the only time ever, the title was shared between the two clubs.
Since then, I’m sure we all know the story Rangers have won the league fifty-four yes FIFTY-FOUR!! times which makes them the joint-most successful domestic team (insert Jeremy Clarkson voice here) IN THE WORLD. They’ve also won the Scottish cup thirty-three times, the league cup twenty-seven times, and the treble a remarkable seven times so quite the empire they have built up,
But as with all empires, they eventually come to an end. The downfall of this empire came in the summer of 2012 when after failing to reach an agreement with creditors, the old club was liquidated and a new club was formed but despite the hopes of the SFA & SPL they rejoined the league pyramid in league two but made short work of progressing back up the league, gaining three promotions in four seasons and returning to the SPL in the 16/17 season.
During that time Rangers old firm rivals Celtic have had their joint longest period of dominance winning the league title nine times with rangers knocking on the door and finishing as runners up in the last two seasons. Now that’s where I come in, as the time has come for the Rangers Empire to be Restored and there’s only one person for the job!! Is it Mourinho? No, it’s not, he’s too busy telling Dele Alli he’s a lazy git. Is it Guardiola? No, he’s busy being taught a lesson by Klopp. Could it be Donald Trump? No, he’s too busy moaning about losing the election in a rivalry much less important than the old firm one. It is, of course, the one and only Badjokesgaming so let’s get into it and have a look at how I’ve been getting on in pre-season.
Day One in the Job
This beautiful man you see here is the guy that’s going to be bringing the SPL trophy back to Ibrox and I’ve got to say the guys at Sports Interactive have done a cracking job with the avatars and the regen faces. they are really good this year.
The first bit of information I had to read through on my opening day in the job was, of course, the club vision and it’s pretty much as you expect, as the board would like us to win everything domestically and get to the first knockout round of the Europa League. I think the domestic targets are very doable depending on how we start the season as I don’t want to be playing catch up behind Celtic I would rather be the one setting the pace.
To try and achieve those goals the board have given me a MASSIVE budget of…… two and a half million pounds and my initial reaction was sooo erm yeah that’s going to be fun trying to improve the squad with that budget. Thanks guys!
However, I then had a brainwave and I remembered that there is quite a good central midfield playmaker that is available on a free after being released from my club West Ham, and I thought I being very original but it turns out I was about as original as a Chinese iPhone Knock off. Because of course, I signed Jack Wilshere, which it turns out most of the FM Community has done on their saves as well. He’s signed for us on a 1-year deal and I’m paying him fifteen thousand a week. which TBH I’m happy with if we can keep him fit I think that will be a bargain.
The second player to come in through the door is Denis Vavro a twenty-four-year-old Slovakian centre back who we’ve picked up from Lazio for what looks like a bargain at two million pounds he’s six foot two with very good heading, tackling & marking as well as being brave and determined and having very good physicals. He has everything you would want for a defender at this level.
To be honest with you guys I thought that would be the end of our transfer window but alas we were forced into making one more deal, as just three weeks before our first game of the league season we lost Allan Mcgregor for the year when he damaged his spine. I heard rumours he was doing some very kinky stuff with a couple of Glaswegian prostitutes but he’s saying he did it stretching getting out of the shower so I’m not sure what you guys want to believe.
So with us having to rush to get a new keeper and having to get someone in on a free, I put out a signal to goalkeepers everywhere ( I imagine it to be like the bat signal but with Gordon Banks’ hand instead of the Bat) and got a whole host of keepers coming to Glasgow from all over the world for trials in what looked like a middle-aged version of Britain’s Got Talent.
Out of all the drivel that showed up we did manage to find one decent keeper that we decided to sign and that is Danijel Subasic who is a thirty-five-year-old Croatian, who has just been released by Monaco after spending nine years there. So he is in for a bit of a culture shock when he arrives in Glasgow. He’s played forty-four times for his country and still looks like he will be a solid option in goal for this season until we can afford to get someone younger and better.
Now that we have the transfers out of the way, let’s now have a look at the tactics that I’ll be using to try and bring the SPL trophy back home to Ibrox.
The first tactic is in my favoured formation of a 4-3-2-1 narrow as I like my teams to keep the ball, attempt to dominate possession and to overload the midfield while getting the ball into Alfredo Morelos. This formation should work well for the squad we have, and I hope this will help us get the best out of Ianis Hagi who is one of the players that I’m most excited to manage in this squad, as I feel he could be a Manuel Lanzini type who can light up the pitch and win games on his own.
The second tactic is one I had (don’t do the Borat voice, don’t do the Borat voice, oh shit I’m doing the Borat voice) great success with on FM20 and that is a 5-2-1-2 which I think with the quality of our wing backs Tavernier and Barisic who we will be attempting to get the ball to quickly with their crossing ability and the two strikers up top with Hagi in behind, should give us a lot of options to do damage against teams that sit back and try to defend against us, which I’m guessing will be most teams in the league.
So that’s how we are going to be looking to line up as we head into the season and I’m feeling confident that we have enough in the squad to win the league. As you can see we’ve played just three games in pre-season and gone unbeaten, but to be honest, there wasn’t too much to learn from those games. I’ll be using the early games in the league to better gauge where we are but I’m expecting to be unbeaten, or not to have dropped many points before we play Celtic for the first time in mid-October.
The Media are predicting us to finish second and have made Celtic big, big favourites to secure the magical tenth league title in a row but I am determined to stop that from happening and to start establishing our own dominance in the league.
See Ya Later Guys
That’s it for today guys & girls thank you so much for reading this. I really hope you’ve enjoyed it and I hope you’re enjoying FM21 as much as I am.
I’ll be back in a few days with the review of season one, at which point I’ll have the answers to the following questions: Will Wilshere play enough games to get an extension to his contract? Or will he be in the local retirement home? Will my other half ever laugh at my jokes? Will I last the season? Come back next time for the answers.
In the meantime drop me a follow on Twitter and join me in the FM Libary Discord and I’m a very happy member of the Passion4FM team who all have awesome content coming out so drop the P4FM account a follow to see what they are all up to #P4FM
